Do You Have Questions About Dental Hygiene?

October is National Dental Hygiene Month! To raise awareness, we want to discuss how you can enjoy improved dental hygiene. In today’s blog, we’re discussing proper brushing and flossing and other methods that help our Tucson, AZ, patients enjoy healthier (and more beautiful) smiles!

Frequently Asked Questions About Improving Dental Hygiene

Question: Will brushing my teeth help?

Answer: Absolutely! Brushing your teeth improves dental hygiene by removing food particles from your teeth. Without removal, these parties will be broken down by harmful bacteria, leading to plaque buildup and a greater risk of cavities and periodontal problems. You should brush with either a manual or electric toothbrush twice a day for two minutes each session!

Question: Why do I need to floss?

Answer: Floss reaches the food particles caught between the teeth and sitting close to the gum line, which brushing alone cannot. You should floss every night before bed, going up and down the length of the tooth and moving briefly beneath the gum line.

Question: What makes a checkup so important?

Answer: Without a checkup every six months, we may not notice the early stages of cavities, infection, gingivitis, or gum disease. These issues then grow worse, until you may start experiencing uncomfortable symptoms and serious complications.

Question:  Should I have my teeth cleaned?

Answer: Yes! During the same visit as your checkup, we will clean your teeth. The procedure involves the removal of all plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth. Brushing and flossing prevent plaque buildup, but cannot remove any plaque adhering to the teeth. The procedure not only protects against cavities and gum disease, but also combats bad breath and teeth stains.
